BORIS HARS-TSCHACHOTIN

An award-winning director and installation artist absorbed by his passion for creating imaginary worlds. Boris‘ work is authentic, expressive and deeply felt, always driven by a powerful visual language, rendered with a mastery of detail. It draws its narrative strength from a particular process of observation, be it in the field of human behavior, science or nature. The desire to construct these narratives developed at an early age from an interest in photography and film. Today Boris loves crossing the border between art and science, challenging the ways documentary and fictional stories are told.

While earning his master’s degree (and later a PhD) in Art History, Philosophy, and Film History at Humboldt-University, he became a feature film location scout. At Studio Babelsberg he met and worked with Jean -Jacques Annaud, lstván Szabó, Richard Donner, Tom Cruise, Wim Wenders or Volker Schlöndorff – „listening,“ as he says, “learning, and becoming ever more inspired.“ As a result, his own work expresses strong emotions, fashioned within simple and compelling atmospheric worlds. His films have been selected for over 60 international festivals including Aspen, Toronto, Munich, Biarritz, and New York. They have been acquired by countless broadcasters and won many awards. Among Boris’s most recently completed projects are This Is The War Room!, a short documentary on the late Sir Ken Adams (Stanley Kubrick’s legendary designer, and Boris’s own mentor); an original TV series concept entitled Éclair; and he is currently developing his first feature film, Songs of Silence, based on an original idea and his own script, which he will be shooting in Canada.

This is the War Room! – Teaser

The legendary production designer Sir Ken Adam, (celebrated for his work on the early James Bond films, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Barry Lyndon among many others), aged 93, cigar in hand, brandishes his Flo-Master one last time to conjure up the year 1962 and the iconic War Room he created alongside Stanley Kubrick in DR STRANGELOVE.

Blank – Teaser

Blank reproduces the sterile conditions of a genetic laboratory of mole¬cular medicine. The room, the bodies and cells of the animals are subject to the strictest controls; everything has been created specially. In the film the viewer will pass through a six-minute animal behavoir experi¬mental setup and participate on different levels.

Makroskop – Teaser

From the depths of a darkened room a “whirlwind” in slow motion glimmers florescent. Without realising the visitor is drawn into the vortex: By going with the flow of images towards the centre of the spiral, by his simply being there, the visitor is the cause of change.
The Makroskop is an interactive, generative space – a connective experiential realm, that mirrors in essence, an audio-visual psychological profile of the last century.

SERGEJ IN THE URN – Trailer

Charismatic, erratic, egocentric, almost forgotten... Sergej Tschachotin was a scientist of international repute, friend to Pavlov and Einstein, revolutionary and pacifist. His private life was equally packed: five marriages, eight sons. The feature documentary tells the story of Tschachotin’s epic existence – from 1883 to 1973 – through the memories of four of those sons. Filmmaker Boris Hars-Tschachotin, Sergej’s great-grandson, weaves together an intimate, tortured family saga that mirrors the myriad contradictions and possibilities of the 20th century.

Lurch – Teaser

The hauntingly evocative short film "Lurch" about a little cypher of a man who becomes increasingly obsessed with his labors in the bowels of a natural history museum, caretaking an emporium of bottled amphibian samples, steeped as they and presently he all are in a dizzying variety of preserving fluids. The taste of these liquids are the pull and trigger.
